I'M Possible Banner

Our school theme here at Krahn Elementary is 

"I'M Possible!"

We are going to create a banner that uses the contrast of color against 

black ad white. The colored pieces will stand out as the words in the banner.

You can see how when the colored pieces sit against the black and white pieces

the words begin to appear. 

Words of Color...

Using grades 1-5, each individual student filled at least one index card with brightly colored designs (3-5) or black, grey, and white line designs (1-2). Each student used markers to fill the space of the card thT would later be puzzled together to make a series of banners to decorate the hall walls of the school. This creates a sense of belonging and unity among all grades of art. They did an amazing job.

Cool and Warm Hands

Start with folding paper into 6-8 boxes. 

Trace hand with pencil. 

Trace finds with pencil. 

Outline hand with black permanent marker. 

Marker line = change color 

Pencil line = change design 

* no solid colors 

* no white, black, or neutral 

I taught the 6th graders the difference between cool and warm color on the color wheel. I assigned them the task of using a tracing of their hands to fill in with warm or cool colors only. I challenged them to use lines only, but allowed them to use shapes as well as part of their designs. One of the easiest ways to do neat designs with minimal effort is in video below. 

Use a lighter shade of the warm or cool color solid in background, then go over the solid with a darker color. This looks like it takes a long time and hard work, but is actually pretty easy. 

Or, use thick stripes rather than solid....

Make It Happen Theme School Banner

This is the entire banner for the theme

"Make It Happen!".

We used quotes from Olympic Medalists and other Wise Theologians. 

The students picked their favorite quote that related to the theme and illustrated it's meaning or simply doodles around the words. 

This is the center piece of the banner I created.

I get just as excited as the kids (if not more) about every assignment given. 

I like to do plenty of examples for them to use as inspiration...
