Supply Board Magnets

This year (my third year of elementary art), I finally realized that not ALL my students could read!
So, when I write steps down on the board with WORDS, not all students (kindergarten mostly) cannot understand the steps. So, I decided to draw the supplies big, color them and cut them out. I laminated them and they put magnets on the back for the white board.

That way I number the steps with the supply next to them for better understanding.
(see above picture).

Here we are learnig how to make "Name Tents" to keep on our table. This will help me learn my 700+ studetns' names this year! It will also help me grasp their understanding of concepts on a continual weekly basis.
Lesson is here...

I also use some of my posters coinciding with the supplies to remind them of proper care or usage.

Hot Day & Cool Night Desert

This lesson will be done with Kindergarten and First Grade.

I started out this lesson with books to look through for comparing night and day desert.
We compared what we thought it was like at both times and why.
The two books above would be great resources if available. I may order them for next year,
but I just used the ones located in the library with pictures as our reference material.

The previous assignment we worked on was focusing of cool colors only.
See Previous lesson here, the Lily Pad Pond:

So, my kindergarten students knew about that area already.
We also talked about warm colors as we talked about desert.
Andy Warhol's Soup Cans
are a great example to show the repeated picture using a variety of colors.

I had the student do a step by step pencil line drawing of a simple cactus landscape.
I then had them outline the pencil lines with a black Crayola maker.
The talk and the outlined drawing took the first 45 minute period.

I took each line drawing to our awesome ladies at the copy room and had them copy each one onto one cool and one warm piece of paper. When the students showed up the next day we used construction paper crayons for each time of day.
They will color the cool paper with only cool crayons to mimic a moody night time desert scene. They can add in extra pieces of the drawing with a marker at this time (stars, moon, animals).
Next, they will color the day desert on the warm paper with only warm crayons. They may add day details (sun, clouds, animals). The two pieces will be taped on the back together to appear as one piece of art.
Examples from our students will be coming soon.
Can't Wait!

Teaching a Kindergardener to Draw Forms

My 5 year old daughter was sitting around bored last night and told me she wanted to draw with me. She wanted me to draw a picture of a table and chairs. Then she wanted to fill in all the details. As I stared drawing the table, I showed her how to draw the top 3 dimensional. She seemed interested and understood the concept. So, I flipped the paper over to the back and showed her how to draw a cube and a cylinder. I explained a foreshortened circle (squashed circle) to her. I showed her a plate and held it to her face so it was a circle. I slowly moved it to an angle and we talked about what happened to the circle.
I was really proud of her interest and understanding.

This is the back of the paper where we practiced drawing cubes and cylinders. I even showed her how to add water to her cups.

After I added the table and chairs, she added all of the details.
She made the light and the glasses using foreshortened circles.
She used a cube to make the flower pot on the floor. She even added a door using overlapping techniques. I was so happy with the results. Being an art teacher definitely doesn't stop at school!
My daughter rocks my socks!

This is an early coloring that she did of one of my drawings (see below).
This was colored at about three years old.
Usually when she sees me working, she thinks she has to work as well.
I made her a copy to mine to color.

Maisy painting in my classroom.

She has take a liking to drawing on our Paint program at home.

She likes to add extra three dimensional elements to her drawings (pom poms, rhinstones).

She wanted to paint Van Gogh's Sunflowers...

Maisy's Sunflowers

She was inspired by a scrap of fabric in the trash.
It ended up being Starry Night.
