LET"S GET STARTED

above by Mrs. Tabitha Seaton Morgan
STEPS
1. Start with 2 square pieces of paper. One should be black and one should be a contrasting color.
*note- I use the example of a "pizza" to start this project. The black is the "crust" at the bottom, the color is the "cheese blob" and the hearts and all other are the "toppings".
2. Since the two pieces are the same size, the top colored paper, the "cheese", must be trimmed and rounded to go inside the "crust" and expose the edges of the black. Draw a roundish square close to the outer edge of the cheese paper and cut off.
3. Burton Morris uses "energy shards" on the edges of his paintings to give the art life. You can use a scissor to make a negative V shape around the edges of the "cheese", or you can use a black marker to draw them in and color them in. When laid down, the look basically the same. Decide which way you are more comfortable with.
4. Get scrap colored paper (I use the pieces that I cut from the cheese paper before I made it square) and cut out heart shapes for your art. Variety of sizes is good. Layering is good. Try to choose colors for your "toppings" that contrast with your "cheese". This will make your hearts stand out stronger and be emphasized.
5. Glue down your hearts and draw a bold black line around them. You can add marker to the hearts on one side or under another heart to appear as though there is a shadow on them.
6. Use white scrap paper to make curved shards to put on your hearts as highlights.
7. Look closer at Burton Morris's art. Find other things you can incorporate if you want to add more interest to your work.
