TeaCup Chihuahua

Chihuahuas were named after the state of Chihuahua, Mexico. These dogs are the smallest breed. There is an even smaller breed called the "teacup Chihuahua". I showed the kids how to draw the Chihuahua step by step using this instruction sheep I created. We started with simple shape, then line, then form, then detail, emphasis and color. We used pencil to start, then sharpie to outline, then crayons to color and water tempera to paint. Students were taught how to draw a cup for the Chihuahua or how to dress the dog as though it was at a Mexican Fiesta ( wearing a sombrero, pancho, ruffle dress or flowers in the hair.

 Draw and outline.
 Color with crayons

Paint with water tempera cakes.

We practiced drawing swans starting with the number 2.
THen formed the head and body from this.
Students added the water lever at half way.
They were encouraged to add pond life to the underwater area.
We brainstormed and made a list of what could be in a pond environment:
frogs, tadpoles, fish, dragonflies, flies, butterflies, turtles, ducks...

Fold paper in half. This fold is the surface of the water.
WIth a PENCIL, Draw the swan on the surface of the water.
Add bottom of swan under the fold (belly and feet).

Madelynn, 1st grade, is here outlining her drawing with a
permanent marker before coloring and  painting.
Kenut, 5th grade is coloring the areas he does not want to paint with crayons.

Color all details (excluding the sky and water)

This project is using a method of crayon resist that I use often with my
Elementary Art students.
Here, the plateaus, plants, rainbow and stars are done with non-washable crayon.
The sky is painted with water tempera cakes.

We are using the SouthWest paintings from
Candy Barr as inspiration.

I have done a complete unit with multiple grades on the subject of
Hot Air Balloons.
See here...

Color all OBJECTS (plateaus, stars, balloons, rainbows, or details)
Hard with CRAYONS
Leave the SKY blank and white for the later absorbance of Water Paint.
Where there is CRAYON, the paper will RESIST the PAINT.
