BIRCH TREES IN THE SUN PHOTOGRAPHS
Study how shadows are cast from the trees in the sun.
Where do they go?
Where is the light source?
How does this effect the shadows?
Make Sense?
Think of it this way...
Think of the Sun as the CENTER OF A CLOCK.
Think of the base of the tree as the number and
the cast shadow as the direction of the arm.
Many artist are inspired by how the light effects the Birch Trees.

Light and dark Green fore ground would be more of a challenge.
These is so much VARIETY in the styles:
-The use of color
-The mood of the sky
But still have so much UINTY:
-the horizon line
-the subject, birches in the sun
-The angle of the shadows on the foreground.

Our Assignment:
CRITERIA:
1. Constant Light source (behind trees)
2. 7 or more Birch Trees (to top of paper)
Coming from horizon line.
3. Cast shadows from light source
4. Shadows on dark side of birch trees
5. Colored sky/background
6. 1 additional creative shaded element
(Animals, snowman, sled, person, structure,
extra layer in background, use of Creative color, or Texture)
DRAW A HORIZON LINE
straight or angle
BACKGROUND TREES
Draw 2 lines for each tree coming out of the horizon line.
CAST SHADOW LINES
Identify where sun will be.
Draw a dot where the center of it will be.
Using a ruler, Connect that dot to each 2 points where the trees come from the ground.
Draw the 2 lines in the snow. They should span outward.
FOREGROUND DETATILS
You can draw a closer tree, an animal, or some detail to make your foreground more exciting.
Add texture lines to your birch trees.
FILL IN SHADOWS with pencil and blend with stump.
Shade the side of each tree according to the light.
THE SKY
Use marker, colored pencil, highlighters, watercolor,
to color the NEGATIVE SPACES between the trees.

Birch trees have marks and shed their bark.
Why do they shed?
What are they black marks?
Animals and Birch trees
White tail deer consume the twigs and foliage, while beavers chew the bark. Seedlings of river birch trees are part of a wild rabbit's diet. The ruby-throated hummingbird, squirrels and yellow-bellied sapsucker ingest the sap from the tree. Birch borers feed on the insides of the birch tree.
Alternative Challenge
Start with darker paper.
Start drawing with pencil.
Outline with darker color marker or colored pencil.
Add shadows on and cast off trees with marker or colored pencil.
Add highlights with white Prisma color.
