Idea from
Sacred Circles
This project is designed to step out of the value scale and into the reality of value in art.
When we develop real shading and value on objects, they will not always be flat and smooth.
we will encounter obstacles with our shading.
This project teaches students how to go beyond the scale.
They learn to shade around things, out of things, between things and more.
This project is done after the value scale practice sheet...
We begin practicing with white charcoal pencil or Prisma Color colored pencil on black paper.
I have them do a value scale, 2 circles (1 in to out and 1 out to in), a triangle and around an oval
(which resembles a face).
Each scale must be smooth and blended. You should see the change of the value, but the where the changes. Transitions should be seem-less.
After they are practiced in these hurdles of creating value, they will go to a large circle and trace their hand. The hand will be left black. Around the hand will be value using the white pencil.
They can incorporate designs, lines, shapes or whatever their imagination can allow them to. But, they must keep in mind that the background and all areas in the background must contain a value scale. This will be more challenging if the design is too complex. Look at some of the examples below to get an idea of what you think you can do.
