Illustrating Quotes

5th graders used the quote,
"Shoot for the Moon. Even if you miss, you'll land among the stars." Brian Litrell

I challenged them to use black, white & grey while still emphasizing the design, important areas and details. We talked about what words in the quote were the most important. Using bigger size, bolder line, shading and creativity with these words could really improve the illustration.
I gave them 2- 45 minute classes to create the designs. Some decided to shoot for the moon by taking their designs home for art homework.
I am happy with these results and hope the images inspire you too!

Giraffe on Kente Cloth

Our school will be having another Culture Night this March! It was so much fun last year to see the students and their families share pieces of their life and culture with curious minds of Krahn Elementary. This year, the artists of Krahn will be sharing inspired ideas from a variety of cultures around the world. These will be on display at Culture Night. YAY!
ONe of these inspired projects will be African Culture.

Giraffes are one of the most unique creatures in the world.
They live naturally in Africa. We will be using these fascinating animals as our subject for this project.

Create Kente Cloth background
Using design ideas from African Textiles

Kente cloth

Kente cloth is a type of silk and cotton fabric made of interwoven cloth strips and is native to the Akan ethnic group of South Ghana. Kente cloth has its origin with the Ashanti Kingdom, and was adopted by people in Ivory Coast and many other West African counties. It is an Akan royal and sacred cloth worn only in times of extreme importance and was the cloth of kings. We will use lines, patterns, colors and interwoven design to inspire us for the background for our giraffe.

The TURTLE
With light pencil, draw turtle onto paper...
Start with basic shapes.
Take it a step further by adding stylized shapes and details...

Outline with black marker to emphasize defining shape, important lines & details.

Use markers and crayons to add details and color to turtle and shell.
Cut out turtles...

Finishing up.
Glue turtle onto your sea paper. You are done.
I added a little emphasis with darker crayons in order to make the weak areas stronger.

Hope you had fun!!

Draw the sea floor on colored construction paper using markers, colored pencils, or crayons.
Use circles to make bubbles. Make a white reflection line on the bubbles at the top.

Make your sea turtle (same as other version)
This shows the colors I used to make my 2 parts.
I tried to stay monochromatic, using different versions of the same color on the papers.
Reds, Pinks, Burgundy, white.
Green, Yellow Green, Sea foam green and white.

I decided to make my 1 turtle appear as 2 different turtles coming form two places.
