Here we use the method of DIY Scratchboard board.
This method uses a resistant material (oil pastel or crayon) underneath black tempera paint. This technique was introduced previously.
Lesson before the lesson, Record Vinyl Scratchboard.
1. Plan out a simple design for your scratch board beneath:
Landscape, cityscape, portrait, animal, or still-life.
*Keeping it simple is ideal or else design may be hard to follow when making it revealed when scratching.
2. Put design up thick paper (cardstock or poster board).
3. Outline with black permanent marker.
-painters tape around edges optional.
4. Color in design HARD and FULLY
With oil pastels or non-washable Crayola crayon.
5. Paint solid with black tempera dish soap mixture.
6. Allow to dry.
*scratching works best if it is freshly applied paint. Paint seems to stain certain colors if left on too long before scratching.
6. Start scratching.
I used horizontal scratches all over until the design was somewhat revealed.
After design started to reappear, I went around edges of subject to remove black for emphasis .
7. Complete the scratches all over.
Finishing touches.
Add any extra scratches in places of emphasis.
Pull off tape if used.
