VOCABLULARY

Contour LIne- lines that give form to a shape. They follow the shape by bending with the exterior defined lines.

Image from ArtPress.com

Cross Contour Line- Lines that cross both horizontally and vertically across a shape to make it a form.

Form-  3D Shape. You can use value (shading)  on a shape or contour lines to make it appear a form.

Stagger- To shift over in pattern.

Perspective- The angle at which you see things and how it effects the way you see objects/situations.

THERE ARE MULTIPLE WAYS TO START; first you must pick your perspective.

Some perspectives are more advanced than others.

Below is Beginner, Middle, and Advanced perspectives.

Each one you START WITH PENCIL. Trace your circle. Add your crossing lines. 20 or so lines across seems the average amount. More will make the mirror mosaics too small and less will make them too big

Pencils lines with be covered with HARD CRAYON. We will use the Crayon Resist technique.

CRAYON lines will be covered with WATERCOLOR in a Variety of tines, shades, and tones.

reflect what would be in the environment of the DISCO BALL.

TAKE NOTES:

Vocabulary-

LINE-
A line is an identifiable path created by a point moving in space. It is one-dimensional and can vary in width, direction, and length. Lines often define the edges of a form. Lines can be horizontal, vertical, or diagonal, straight or curved, thick or thin.

SHAPE-
A shape is when a line becomes closed, where the line forms the boundary and the space within is the shape. A shape is a two-dimensional space.
Ex: Square, circle, triangle....

ORGANIC SHAPE-
Organic shapes are figures that do not conform to specific mathematical or geometrical principles and appear natural. They have freeform and inspire feelings of calmness and naturalness.
Ex: Blob, cloud, ameba, splat.

VALUE-
Value is the lightness or darkness of a color or hue, and it's a core element that adds dimension to a piece. Artists can create value in different ways, depending on the medium they're using.

VALUE SCALE-
A value scale is organized values to show the lightness or darkness in order from white (LL) to Dark (dd). It usually consists of nine values, ranging from white to black, with shades of gray in between. The scale is often visualized as a gradient, with white at the top and black at the bottom.
Smooth, Even, and Contrasting ends.

Line to Shape Creative Lettering
----Practice----

Criteria:

Create Name out of Creative Shape Letters -

Start with light LINE letters that FILL UP THE SPACE (50 to 75% of paper)

Trace around the letters to make SHAPE letters.

Then erase the original lines to show shapes only.

Draw organic shape around your name.

Draw a staggered brick background.

EMPHASIZE your pencil with darker, thicker marker

Optional- add details and style

Add pencil and blending stump around organic shape...
(see video)

Use value with 2 colors on the letters

Add Value with 2 colors in Outer Organic Shape

Challenge- add in a 3rd color to background shape to blend with other 2.

I have taught this before in Middle School.
