What is surrealism?
In the art world,
sur·re·al·ism
/səˈrēəˌliz(ə)m/
noun
- a 20th-century avant-garde movement in art and literature which sought to release the creative potential of the unconscious mind, for example by the irrational juxtaposition of images.
In Mrs. Morgan’s words, it is something that looks realistic as though it is happening, but in reality it could never happen. Kinda like a weird dream you might have. It seemed real, but when you wake up, you realize it was bizzare.
jux·ta·po·si·tion
/ˌjəkstəpəˈziSHən/
For example, using things in varying sizes together: an irrational arrangement like an elephant riding on the back of an ant, a person flying in a large shoe, a giraffe wearing a suit snd tie at the front of a classroom.
col·lage
/kəˈläZH/
noun: a piece of art made by sticking various different materials such as photographs and pieces of paper or fabric on to a backing.
-In French, it means "to stick down or glue". The first recognized artistic collage is widely considered to be Pablo Picasso's 1912 work, "Still Life with Chair Caning,"In Mrs. Morgan’s words, it is taking pictures or objects and gluing them creatively onto a surface.

You will be finding images in magazines to use.
You need:
-A big background piece (no words or cartoons)
-3 images that would not normally belong to your background.
- cleanly cut out images to make them look like they are naturally in the background (not cut and glued)
-see example below?
Pay attention to how the toothbrush and mustard bottle were creatively put into background.

YOUR TURN!!!
You will be creating a collage from magazines to form a surrealism scene.
The PICTURE HUNT
You will need to find a picture to use as a
BASE BACKGROUND first.
This could be a room, landscape, or a design. The less words or advertising on it, the better. You can always cover unwanted words or adds with something you glue onto it.
SUBJECTS
After the base background is found, you can hunt for things to cut out and glue down.
These should be real things (no cartoons or drawings) to make the picture seem real.
You need 4 or more added pieces to the collage.
