Grandma Moses was a great Genre painter in he 1900's. She was a self taught folk artist that started painting towards the later end of her life. She loved to paint her quaint town in every season. She loved to tell stories of what her townspeople do during each season. She is a great artist to talk about for the WinterWonderland project.
(see her 4 Winter Scapes below)
Crayon and Paper
(no paint)
Set background aside and begin using colored scrap paper to draw houses.
I show a slideshow of village scenes for them to get ideas for architecture.
One way to get good images is google "Christmas Cards Snow Village".
Add detail and outline for emphasis. Cut out and glue down onto the snows cape.
After you glue down your village, go back to drawing on the background. I added a street lamp, sidewalks, extra large snowflakes toward bottom.
Paper and White Paint
(no water)
While the background is drying, start to use paper to draw houses. Add detail and outline for emphasis. Cut out and glue down onto the snows cape.
Water Paint Resist Method
have students draw the horizon line of snow on the paper towards the middle bottom. Add trees with black and snow with white crayon or white pastel.
I tried this with white crayon and white oil pastel. The pastel tended to work better.
Use the tempera cakes or water colors to add colors to the sky (any color except green).
It can be morning, night or sunset sunrise although darker colors do help to emphasize the white snowflakes.
