The Wanted Poster

What is a "Wanted Poster"?
Since the invention of the internet, you don't see these posters around much. 
You usually think of them as something from the old days... 
The purpose of the poster is the get help finding a person who has committed a crime. 
The poster will tell the crime committed, have a picture of the offender, a description, and any information that may help somebody identify the offender. This could be what they were wearing, where they might be, what activities they could be doing, who they might be seen with, and places they have lived before.



YOU ARE WANTED!! 
Me, your art teacher, WANTS to get to know you. I want to know your good and bad habits, who your friends are, what your favorite shows are, your artistic abilities, and more. 
The Challenge:
What 4 habits, good or bad, could you be wanted for? This is for real, not pretend. 
For example, I could be wanted for;
1. My addiction to diet soda (bad),
2. Forgetting where I'm going (bad)
3. Obsession with Creating (good)
4. Thrift Shopping fashionista (good)

VOCABULARY
Vertical- up and down, top to bottom. 
Horizontal- left to right, side to side, like the horizon line where the sun goes up and down. 
Proportions-Amount of something compared to something else. 
Symmetry- Being the same on both sides vertically, horizontally, or both. 
Balance- How equal something is compared vertical or horizontally. 
Why is Symmetry & Proportion
Important?
The artist Napoleon Dynomite said ,” it took me like three hours to finish the shading on the upper lip.”
Lesson learned: get proportion and symmetry correct before spending ours on out of place details.

FOR THE TEACHERS

I do a "Wanted Poster" every year as our first project. I love doing them for many different reasons. First of all, they help me get to know what students like, what their tastes are, and their personalities. Second, it helps me see where they are artistically. And Last, I can see if the are good at following directions.
I give them all the same form to fill out. It has a variety of informations (physical attributes, home and family info, likes and interests).
They are instructed to use their bad habits or flaws to have as what they are "wanted" for. I want to know if the play too much playstation, bite their nails when they are nervous, or text while bicycling! When I see their habits, I tell them that this is real habits, and that we are not making up illegal ideas that you might possible do (or hopefully have never done!). Do not write that you robbed a bank or blew up a church. False information will not help me to know you, it will only let me know that you do not follow directions and points will be deducted.
I also have them draw their face (best the can)to fill up the space given. I hand out mirrors for this if they want. But, I encourage them to do what they are comfortable with (cartoon or realistic).  One thing in for sure, I want them to try to make it look most like them rather than a pretend or older version of themselves. It cannot be something unreal (no mustaches or robber masks).
I also have them draw the kind of outfit they would wear on a regular basis.
It is a fun way for me to get into their heads and learn more about their lives. I keep these all year on file for reference and to see the artistic growth from the first week of art.





This is a tried and true lesson for all you Art Teachers (or any subject really).
I have done it for 9 years and still love the results.
It is a great getting to know you activity for 6-12th grade.
